I am no expert on the matter, but due to insistent demand around my circle lately, I thought I'd put together some points to consider when the parents want to know if their child is on drugs.
First of all, do you know your child well? If not, it will be wise to get to know them, whether you want to find out if he/she is on drugs or not. Knowing them will help you distinguish the telltale signs from what is considered "usual". I'd like to call it "6Ps and Beyond":
1.PHYSICAL APPEARANCE - Does he come home with bleary or blood-shot eyes? Glass-looking eyes? Does he have marks e.g. sores on his body (for those injecting it)? They even try to hide it with clothing. Has he been getting sniffles lately? How do they smell? Do you detect a burnt-smell? Do they wear a lot of cologne to camouflage something all of a sudden? Has there been any changes in their grooming? Are they losing weight? Do they suddenly have a large appetite or none at all?
2. PERSONALITY - Have they been having a lot of moods swings lately? Suddenly withdrawn (unlike his usual self), or suddenly energetic and hyper when he usually isn't? Can't concentrate? Can't even make eye contact? Does he seem to be "scatter-brained" lately?Absent-minded? Negligent?
3. PEERS- Is there a change in your child's schedule and whereabouts? Does he keep to himself a lot (which can be suggestive of doing it alone) or does he hand out with other kids so unreasonably long, especially in a remote place and away from prying eyes?
4. PRIVACY - Is he suddenly overly concerned with privacy, getting mad at you for entering his room?
5. PLAYING GAMES- Have you been catching him telling a lot of lies? All of a sudden inconsistent with his stories? Manipulating?
6. POSSESSIONS- Has he been running out of money lately? Or in need of more? Asking for more allowance for projects or food? Have things been missing lately? Has he been scrounging around for thing to sell, like recyclable stuff? What does he say when you look for his valuable stuff? Does he play it vague like they don't know or forgot or didn't remember?
The answers to these questions might be some indicators that will let you decide if your child needs help or not.
As parents, you have the responsibility to take matters seriously and steer your child back to the right path. There area lot of facilities out there that can assist parents in this endeavor such as the Ohio Drug Rehab for instance (you can check your area for local facilities). I mentioned this Ohio Drug Rehabilitation facility because of someone I know who straightened up after the program. But Drug Rehab in Ohio or not, we parents need to be on the lookout and make sure that our child gets attended to ASAP.
If you're strong enough, you can of course do random urine tests once in a while. Or better yet, find the services of a counselor to mediate for you.
6Ps and Beyond. Look further. Look hard.
